Sprinkler Repair Tips
A head that will not rise does not automatically need replacing. Low pressure, a leak, a restriction, or damage to the head can produce similar symptoms. Start by comparing that head with the rest of the zone.
Check the symptom before buying parts
- One head behaves differently: look for visible damage, a blocked spray path, or debris. Identify the head and nozzle before choosing compatible parts.
- The whole zone is weak: check supply conditions, leaks, filters, and valves. Replacing every head may leave the cause untouched.
- A zone will not start: review the schedule, rain delay, and any error message. The fault may involve the water supply, valve, wiring, sensor, or controller.
- Water keeps running: turn the controller off. If flow continues, use the dedicated irrigation shutoff only if you know how to operate it safely.
Use instructions for your equipment
Spray heads, rotors, valves, and controllers have different adjustment and repair procedures. There is no universal pipe depth, nozzle adjustment range, electrical reading, or replacement price that applies to every system. Match replacement parts to the model, flow, pressure, and watering rate the zone needs; matching a brand name alone is not enough.
Use Hunter’s guide to rotors that do not fully rise and Rain Bird’s controller and valve troubleshooting guides for manufacturer guidance. A low voltage or resistance reading by itself does not prove the controller or solenoid needs replacement; connections and wiring also need evaluation.
Before opening or digging into the system
Isolate the irrigation water supply and relieve pressure before opening plumbing components. Turning the timer off alone may leave supply pipes pressurized. Follow the Blue Stakes of Utah process before excavation and account for private lines. Keep mains-voltage compartments closed and leave electrical testing, backflow work, and unfamiliar repairs to a qualified professional.
